湯圓
these two things are called 湯圓, which is roughly translated as "soup circles" i suppose..people in taiwan usually eat these 湯圓 things during the winter solstice (冬至). today (dec. 22, 2005) is the winter solstice for 2005 so i guess that's why i'm eating these. (last year it was on the 21st.)

the dictionary translated it as "stuffed dumplings made of glutinous rice flour served in soup". whatever.
it's not as disgusting as it looks. it's actually pretty delicious. it's usually sweet (though there are some salty ones. i don't like the salty ones.).
the black stuff spilling out is sesame. there are different kinds of stuffing inside.
sesame is one flavor, peanut (tastes kind of like liquid peanut brittle) is another, and as i said earlier, there are some salty tasting ones.
