[Misadventures in Taiwan]

the difference between here and the rest of the world?

This Engadget article's topic is about a new 3-megapixel phone from a Taiwanese company. The phone admittedly looks plastic and toylike in the photo and the article said that products like these remind us how easy it is to tell the difference "between Chinese and Taiwanese gear and, er, the rest of the world’s (okay, BenQ excepted)."

oh ho ho ho.. they've never seen the worst tech of this region yet if they think the phone's that bad. aside from the phone's name (X-cute), it's not really that bad, because trust me, i've seen (and bought!) much worse.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
bad tech products always have corporate mottos like these on their websites:
1. Alive your life.
2. Digital your life.
3. Wireless your life.
4. _Insert anything_ your life.

bad tech products from these parts invariably have one of these two letters/ word fragments/ punctuation marks in their names.

1. X
2. apostrophes galore in all the wrong places (e.g. CyQ've)
3. an X with an apostrophe (X's)
4. cute (there's the Engadget featured phone, X-cute; and i-cute, another manufacturer that's best known for making computer cases but has a bunch of other products under their wing too. i see i-cute everywhere.)
5. pod (e.g.musepod, cocopod, dopod,... i'm sure i'm missing a couple more)

walk down 北門路 (Bei Men Road) in Tainan City where all the tech shops are and your eyes will be assaulted by these "cute"-ly labeled products."

i think the "pod" names are winning over "cute" and "x'". this observation is based on my almost daily perusal for the past week of Yahoo Taiwan's auction site and Ebay Taiwan for my search for a Creative Zen Micro.

Fun your life! Try out these links.

1. Yahoo Taiwan Shopping, MP3 section
the links on the left (for example 256MB mp3, 512 mp3, Miruku, U-Best, etc..) are mp3 player categories. click randomly and give chance a chance. Go LCD screen-less iPod Shuffle.

2. PChome Shopping, MP3 section
the links on the left (for example 256MB mp3, 512 mp3, Miruku, U-Best, etc..) are mp3 player categories. click randomly and give chance a chance again.

3. Yahoo Taiwan Auction Site
(tips: try typing "pod" "ipod" "mp3" in the search box. (hellooo dvx-pod!)

4. Ebay Taiwan
(same tips as with #2)

and now for some photos:

1. X's Drive Pro mp3 player/ 7-in-1 card reader (not USB on-the-go host) (product page):

oh boy this product sucks. two hour battery life! what the hell. this is available as a 2.5" hard disk enclosure or already with the hard drive built in. i bought this as an enclosure as i already have another little hard drive that i'm using. what a ripoff.

saw the next two while browsing auction and shopping sites (see fun fun links above).

2. S-Media Cocopod (Listed as Gogopod in some places) (product page):
